There are many ways to travel through Central America, from tours providing 5 star transport and accommodation right "down" to camping and hiking tours. After carefully studying the multitude of available travel brochures, I chose to travel with Gap Adventures, a Canadian based company specialising in adventure tours of Central & South America. Gap provides flexible itineraries, group sizes never exceeding 12 people and the services of an experienced guide. Probably of more importance, GAP has a strong policy of ensuring it's tours do not cause any harm to the local environment. This extends to using local transport wherever possible, which can mean some delays but also means you get to meet the real people of the region.
If you're looking for 5 star accommodation and luxury transport, GAP
isn't for you. If, however, you want a mixture of rough and comfortable
transport and clean & tidy accommodation, maybe it is. Combined with
free time in most locations so you can see and do as you please, guides
who know where the best inexpensive restaurants are, I'd certainly recommend
GAP. And no, they didn't pay me for saying this.
