Introduction
One of the most common images of Mexico is one of the hustle & bustle
of Mexico City, the beaches & nightlife of Acapulco. Guatemala, whilst
known for its natural beauty still suffers from an image of personal danger,
earned during its previous history of political instability. Belize is
a mystery to many people, so difficult to place on a map that many people
do not even get the continent correct. In Belize (previously known as British
Honduras), the national language is English, spoken with a casual Caribbean
twang. In Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras the national language is Spanish,
although English is spoken by many people. Nevertheless, it is recommended
that travellers learn a limited amount of Spanish, as well as earning the
respect of the local population, this can help prevent tourists being charged
"tourist rates" at some restaurants, bars and shops. Learning how to count
in Spanish is of immense help when bargaining for that "must have" item
from street markets.
There's an abundant variety of things to see and do in this region of
the world. There are the remnants of the Mayan history, at their height
one of the worlds most advanced and sophisticated civilisations. Combine
this with Spanish colonial cities, the paradise of Caribbean beaches, rain-forests
with wildlife straight out of National Geographic, incredibly friendly
and peaceful people and you have a holiday destination worth seeking out.
